General questions

Traditionally more goat milk is consumed worldwide than cow milk. Goat milk has also been used for follow-on formula in other countries for much longer. Until a few years ago, legislation in Europe only allowed cow milk and soy in infant formula. In 2014, the European Union expanded the legislation and since then formula with goat milk is also available in Europe. Sometimes it just takes a while before good things happen.

Follow-on formula based on goat milk is a great alternative to follow-on formula based on cow milk. Our products have a mild flavour and meet all legal requirements. And... 'The goat is just a slightly different animal.'

PLEASE NOTE that our follow-on milk is not suitable for babies with lactose intolerance or cow milk allergy.

Our products are certified organic according to European standards. All Organic products must meet the same European standards in order to obtain the Organic certificate. This means that independent bodies supervise and check that all rules for organic farming and production of organic foods are being complied with. In the Netherlands, SKAL Biocontrol ensures that all rules are followed: www.skal.nl .

The European logo for organic products on our packaging means

  • that crops are grown without chemical pesticides and that also applies to the feed that the goats receive
  • no fertilizers may be used
  • that products are free of genetically modified ingredients (so guaranteed GMO-free)
  • that dairy goats do not receive (preventive) antibiotics and are not treated with growth- or milk-stimulating hormones that the dairy goats have more space in the barn and must also be able to go outside
  • that companies produce as little waste as possible and reuse it as much as possible that the entire production chain is kept separate from non-organic products.

That is a sensitive subject. But we also like to give an honest answer to this.

All kinds of products are made based on goat's milk. From goat yogurt and goat cheese to our own formula. For the production of goat milk, there must be lambs are born. Only then does the goat produce milk.

The female lambs that are born later also give milk. But there will be male goats were also born, billy goats. And they play no role in milk production. Of course, a number of billy goats are needed for reproduction. But what happens to the goats that remain?

Goat meat is not popular in our country. As a result, the bucks yield little money. However, this should not lead to poor care of these animals. A lot Organic goat farmers have taken measures to improve the care of the goats
improve.

For example, the Organic goat farmers have agreed with each other that the goats born on their
farms not going to a fattening farm. The animals stay at least three weeks on the farm where they are born. Of course the animals are well treated there.

After that period of at least 21 days, they can take the transport to the slaughterhouse or the export destination (countries such as Spain, Portugal, France and Italy) well*. It remains a sad story.

* According to the law, the goats can be taken to slaughter when they are at least a week old.

Every now and then we have a discount promotion on our website - we just like that.

Just want to mention the following about this:
Unfortunately, we are not allowed to offer a discount on our 400g and 800g infant formula due to European legislation.
The discount code cannot be combined with other discount codes.
The product discount is only supported for one-time purchases.

All follow-on formula available (on the shelves and online) complies with the rules regarding the quality and composition of infant formula.

We make certain choices with regard to the origin of our ingredients: we choose organic and whole goat milk.

Product-specific questions

We make our follow-on formula based on whole goat milk. Whole milk means that we do not extract anything from the milk before we process it. The taste of our products is mild and creamy. We don't think our follow-on formulas taste goaty :-)

The term GOS means Galacto-OligoSaccharides. GOS fiber occurs naturally in certain nuts and legumes. GOS has also been added to follow-on milk for some time. Recently, Organic GOS has also been made (so from Organic milk) and we can add it to our Organic follow-on milk.

DHA is the short term for “DocosaHexaenoic Acid”. The science was long gone and now, fortunately, so is the entire industry: Since 2020 it is mandatory to add DHA to follow-on formula. Of course we therefore also add DHA to our follow-on formula. But then DHA made from Algae. DHA can be obtained from algae or from fish oil. DHA is produced in algae and because fish eat this algae, larger fish contain a lot of DHA. For our follow-on formula we have chosen the source of DHA: Algae.

To meet the needs of babies, extra carbohydrates must be added to follow-on formulas, this applies to all follow-on formulas. We have opted for lactose from milk, which is why it is also called milk sugar. Another source of carbohydrates that is often used in industry is maltodextrin, a vegetable source of carbohydrates from, for example, potatoes or maize.

Palm oil is mainly produced in Asia and is then shipped to Europe. The vast majority of palm oil is produced in an unsustainable manner, at the expense of the environment and the rainforest (see for example the website of the World Wildlife Fund www.wnf.nl or Greenpeace www.greenpeace.org ).

We could of course also have opted for sustainable palm oil – yes, that exists and there is a very good international initiative for this (have a look at www.RSPO.org ). But we didn't do that. Now you're probably wondering why there is palm oil in formula. Well, because palm oil is very cheap.

We also do not use soybean oil from Brazil or coconut oil from Asia. Why should we source vegetable oil from all over the world, when we have excellent ingredients ourselves? So rapeseed oil and sunflower oil, straight from Europe.

Switching from Pure Goat Company's follow-on milk 2 to follow-on milk 3 a little earlier or later is not a problem. The indicated age on the packaging therefore partly overlaps. However, follow-on milk (and that applies to both 2 and 3) is not suitable for children younger than 6 months. Until then, they are still completely dependent on what they drink, whether that is breast milk or follow-on milk. Follow-on milks 2 and 3 are tailored to the needs of older babies as part of a varied diet.

Allergy / intolerance / complaints

Baby food based on goat milk is not suitable for babies/children with a medically confirmed cow milk allergy. Once allergic to the proteins in cow's milk, your child can also react to goat's milk. Cow's milk allergy is not very common in itself and can usually be recognized by symptoms such as skin complaints (itching, eczema, bumps), stomach and intestinal complaints, but also respiratory complaints. If you cannot breastfeed, special formula is available for babies with cow's milk allergy. Your doctor or consultation office can tell you more about this.

See also the website of the Nutrition Center: https://www.voedingscentrum.nl/encyclopedie/koemelkallergie.aspx

Our formula (Pure Goat Company's stage 1, 2 and 3) contains lactose (milk sugar). As a result, our products are not suitable for babies/children with a known lactose intolerance. Fortunately, lactose intolerance in babies is very rare. It is much more likely that intestinal discomfort is caused by something other than lactose intolerance. Or that it concerns intestinal cramps that are part of the growth and development of a baby; quite a lot changes in a very short time. If there is no cow's milk allergy, you can try follow-on milk based on goat's milk. Do check with your doctor or consultation office first

This question actually means that bottle feeding with cow milk causes mucus production. Despite the fact that this is often claimed, this connection is not actually there: studies have shown that after drinking cow milk, the production of mucus does not increase and does not lead to asthmatic complaints*. However, the combination with milk can provide slightly thicker saliva. It is therefore unlikely that bottle feeding with goat  milk would lead to less mucus than bottle feeding with cow milk.

However, there are a few exceptions: children with a cow's milk allergy may suffer from extra mucus production and/or asthmatic complaints. Goat's milk is not an alternative for children with established cow's milk allergy. Talk to your doctor or clinic if you are considering trying follow-on milk with goat's milk, for example.

Preparing bottle feeding

Exactly how much you should give depends on several things. Our packaging contains the average guidelines tailored to the weight or age of your child. More information can be found on our product pages.

Important: breastfeeding is simply the best food for your baby. Before you decide to bottle feed, we recommend that you first discuss this with your doctor or health centre. They can indicate exactly how you can start with this and how much you should give. Sometimes this is, for example, a combination of breastfeeding with additional bottle feeding or only bottle feeding. Not many babies are exactly “average”, so deviating from the guidelines on our packaging may be necessary. You also don't have to worry if a bottle is not completely drunk every now and then.

The best thing for our bottle feeding is to follow these steps:

* Of course, the bottles and teats must first be thoroughly cleaned by sterilizing them in a pan of boiling water for about 5 minutes. Also make sure that the rest is clean and wash your hands with warm water and soap.

* Boil (tap) water and let it cool down to about 40°C. Then add the required amount of water to the bottle

* Add the correct number of level scoops of powder to the water in the bottle. You can use the edge of the lid to level off the scoop.

* Screw the cap with the teat on the bottle and shake or swirl until all the powder has dissolved. Do not shake too hard, because then you can get too much foam and that is not easy to drink.

* Always check the temperature of the food on the inside of your wrist.

* Good luck!

Important: use the prepared food within 1 hour. Always dispose of any leftovers immediately; so don't reheat. Improper preparation and storage can pose health risks, especially for the little ones.

In the Netherlands, tap water is generally of excellent quality and there is no reason to use, for example, mineral water for formulating formula. Just let the tap run and you have great water straight from the tap. And of course we recommend to boil water before using it for bottle feeding. Mainly as a precaution actually.

No good tap water at hand? Mineral water is also fine, but without carbon dioxide and do not use mineral water with extra minerals. This is often stated on the bottle.

It is better not to heat our formula in the microwave. The disadvantage of the microwave is that the bottle does not heat up evenly and there is a good chance that the bottle will become too hot. And that is not good for the quality, which we have done our best.

We do not recommend reheating cooled formula, because freshly prepared formula is simply better: a bottle must be drunk within an hour, otherwise it's better to throw it away and start over.

Pre-boiling the water in the microwave is of course possible. And then of course let the water cool down to about 40°C before adding our powder.

Once prepared formula must be consumed within an hour. Then you better throw it away and start over. Reheating is not a good idea and we also advise against preparing bottles in advance and putting them in the fridge.

Freshly prepared formula is best: we do our utmost to ensure the highest possible quality and leaving it standing for more than an hour and/or reheating it is not wise. Improper preparation and storage can pose health risks, especially for the little ones.

The spoons are often made specifically for a certain formula. That is why there is a separate scoop in each can. If you use a different scoop, you may be adding too much or too little powder. Now that's not exactly a problem - and it's always better than using a soup spoon - but it's better not to do this. Therefore, always use the scoop from the can.

If by accident there is no scoop in one of our cans, please let us know via info@puregoatcompany.com.

Our infant formula powders are packaged airtight and under a protective atmosphere in cans and then have a long shelf life. Once opened, oxygen and moisture enter the powder. Therefore, do not keep an open can for too long; we recommend using our powders for a maximum of 3 weeks after opening. Not that it is immediately spoiled, but after that we can no longer guarantee that it still meets our quality standards. Always store our bottle food tightly closed with the plastic lid, at a low humidity and not warmer than 20 degrees - and certainly not in the refrigerator.
